How to upgrade from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4

Universal Analytics will no longer process new data in standard properties beginning July 1, 2023. Prepare now by setting up and switching over to a Google Analytics 4 property. Learn more.

Since Universal Analytics will be discontinued in the summer of 2023, it is important to switch over as soon as possible . When you create a Google Analytics 4 Property, your Universal Analytics property remains unchanged, and all your historical data will remain. But, new data will now be tracked under the new property.

Step 1: Create New Google Analytics 4 Property

When you log in to your Google Analytics Account, you will see a blue banner at the top of your account hasn’t been upgraded yet. To upgrade, click on the “Let’s go” button on the right. This will launch the Google Analytics 4 Property Setup Assistant to help you create the new property and click the “Get Started” button, as shown below, then “Create and Continue

Next, it is time to connect your newly created property to your website! Click on the button “Go to your GA4 property

Explore and set up your GA4 property.

Step 2: Connect Google Analytics 4 Property to your Website

The setup assistant will automatically create a new data stream for you. Next we need to connect the data stream to your website so it can collect data. From the left menu in your Google Analytics Account, Click on “Data Streams.”

It will then open a screen with the below information. Click on your property below.

Then click on “View tag instructions

Data collection isn’t active for your website. If you installed tags more than 48 hours ago, make sure they are set up correctly.

Step 3: Install your Google Tag

From here, you can choose your website platform and follow the instructions or click on “Install manually” to copy and paste the code immediately after the <head> element on every page on your website.

Step 4: Test

Now that you have installed the new Google Analytics code, click the “Reports” tab from the left menu then “Realtime”. In another tab, open the homepage of your website. If you can see an active user, then installation has been successful!

You will need to update any analytics tools you have that are connected to your old Universal Property.
